Kaunoa School was definitely not your average school. Established by the Hawaii Department of Education in 1920, and relocated to Spreckelsville in 1926, Kaunoa was one of those select English Standard schools set aside for students with the ability to speak proper English. Although Kaunoa was a public school, prospective students had to pass an entrance exam before being allowed to enroll.

A little bit of history

Class histories have been reproduced from old copies of the Canetops, the school annual, which was first published in 1951. Prior to that, the Canetops was in a monthly newsletter format. (The background for this page depicts the tassel from the sugar cane plant. This is what the yearbooks were named after.)

The class of '57 was the last group of students admitted to the school based on a verbal English test, and to complete all eight grades. After 1957, Spreckelsville School was closed and its students were sent to Kaunoa under the DOE's neighborhood school policy. Kaunoa was closed in 1964.

The campus site is now the Kaunoa Senior Citizens Center. The school cafeteria building was remodeled, but all of the classrooms were demolished and replaced with new buildings.

The most notable person to have attended Kaunoa school was Patsy (Takemoto) Mink, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives until her death in 2002. The current mayor of Maui County, Charmaine Tavares, is a member of the class of 1957.

The classes of '53 and '57 have held regular class reunions, most recently in June, 1997, August, 1997, October 2002, June 2003, and October 2007.

The classes of 1960 and 1958 held reunions in October, 2008.

SCHOOL CREED

We are citizens of a little democracy, our school. We desire to make it one of which we may be proud. We realize that individual responsibility for right action makes the united strength of our school. Therefore, we believe that every student should be a team worker. He will then be obedient, courteous, cheerful, brave, reliable, helpful, clean, ambitious, and loyal.
