The information here was taken from the Canetops issues of 1951 and 1952. No information was given on our other teachers.
1st Grade
Mrs. Pauline Silva was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and attended
Normal School in Honolulu. Mrs. Silva came here in September,
1949, and had taught at Spreckelsville School. She says she enjoys
being here. Her hobbies are art work and fishing.
Mrs. Sarah Duponte received her schooling at the University of Hawaii. She is retiring after thirty-two years of service. We will miss her.
2nd Grade
Miss D. Virjean Parker was born in Iowa, but spent most of her
life in California. Miss Parker attended San Francisco State
College and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree. This is her first
year here at Kaunoa and she likes it very much. Previous to coming
here, Miss Parker taught at a nursery school in California.
Mrs. Evelyn D. Rego comes from Kula, Maui. She attended the University of Hawaii and holds a Bachelor of Education Degree. She came here in 1947 and has been here ever since. Before coming here she taught at Puunene School.
Mrs. Charlotte Susu-Mago hails from Westminister, Maryland. She attended the University of Southern California and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mrs. Susu-Mago came to our school this year and says she enjoys it very much. Before coming here she taught at a night school in Los Angeles and once taught a 70 year old man to read and write. Now she is teaching 7 year olds the same thing.
3rd Grade
Mrs. Ruth B. Doty attended the Washington State Normal School
in Ellsburg, Washington. Among the schools has taught in Hawaii
are Kapalama in Honolulu; Honomu, Kamuela, and Kapiolani on the
Big Island. Mrs. Doty first came here in 1938.
Mrs. Harriet Hasse received her education at the Wisconsin State Teachers' College. Before coming to Kaunoa, Mrs. Hasse taught at schools in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Miss Elaine Noland, who came to Kaunoa in September, is from Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from the Maryland State Teachers' College. She holds the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education. Before coming to Maui, she taught in Maryland. Miss Noland says Kaunoa is the best school in the world.
4th Grade
Mrs. Emily Enos has attended summer classes at the University
of Hawaii. She taught at Kihei School before coming here. Mrs.
Enos says she enjoys Kaunoa.
Miss Nina Kirk holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Wisconsin and has been teaching for nineteen years. She taught at Wailuku Elementary before returning to Kaunoa in 1949.
Mrs. Katherine Hughes holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Nevada and has taken graduate work at the University of Wyoming and Hawaii. She has been at Kaunoa since 1943.
8th Grade
Mrs. Jean McIntyre Priest holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from
the University of Nevada. She came to Kaunoa in January, 1950.
Mrs. Priest is the 8th grade homeroom teacher and teaches 7th
and 8th grade English, Literature, and Art. She is the advisor
for Canetops. Mrs. Priest says she'd rather teach here than any
where else.
Mrs. Alica O'Conner Walsh was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. She attended the University of Hawaii and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mrs. Walsh came to Kaunoa, having previously taught at Wailuku Junior High and Puunene Schools. Mrs. Walsh teaches both the 7th and 8th grade Social Studies and Science. She says that the students here are very alert and she enjoys teaching them. She is also the advisor of the Student Council.
